Carbide is worth many times what steel is, and a production shop can accumulate a serious quantity in a year without noticing. Put a sealed container by each machine, label it, and empty it when it is full. Most shops we start working with are genuinely surprised by what a year of swept-up inserts turns out to be worth.

Do I need to sort my carbide first?
Basic separation helps. Keeping solid carbide apart from brazed-tip tooling, and both apart from high-speed steel, will get you a better price than one mixed bucket. You do not need to sort by grade or coating — that makes no practical difference to what we pay.
How do I know if my tooling is actually carbide?
Carbide is noticeably heavier than steel of the same size, much harder, and darker grey. If you drop a carbide insert on concrete it tends to chip rather than dent. A magnet will pull weakly or not at all on solid carbide, while high-speed steel is strongly magnetic. If you are unsure, send a photo — we can usually tell immediately.
