Remove Iron Attachments Before Selling
The biggest thing that reduces the price on brass fittings is iron or steel attachments — nipples, stems, iron pipe threaded into brass fittings. Removing those before you sell can move your lot from "mixed" grade to clean yellow brass, which pays significantly more per pound. How do I know if I have brass?
Brass is a yellow-gold or reddish metal that does not stick to a magnet. If your metal is yellowish, heavy, and non-magnetic, it's almost certainly brass or copper. If it's yellowish but slightly lighter and magnetic, it may be gold-painted steel — a magnet test settles it quickly. When in doubt, send us a photo.
Is brass worth more than copper?
Copper generally pays more per pound than brass because copper has higher purity. However, red brass (85%+ copper content) prices close to copper, and all brass pays significantly more than steel or aluminum. Brass is one of the most valuable common scrap metals.
Do you buy small amounts of brass?
