Bare Bright
Copper.

Bare bright is the top copper grade and the one worth the most per pound. It is clean, uncoated, unalloyed copper wire thicker than 16 gauge, with no paint, solder, corrosion or insulation. If you are stripping wire, this is what you are working toward.

What Counts As
Bare Bright Copper

Knowing which grade you actually have is the difference between getting paid well and getting paid the mixed rate.

What Qualifies
Strict grade
Shiny, uncoated copper wire heavier than 16 gauge. No insulation residue, no paint, no solder, no oxidation or green tint. Anything that fails one of those drops to #1 or #2.
The bar is strict, but the price difference justifies it.
What Disqualifies It
Common mistakes
Tarnish or green oxidation, remaining insulation, solder blobs, or wire thinner than 16 gauge. Thin wire is graded separately no matter how clean.
Age alone can push clean copper out of bare bright.
Where It Comes From
Typical sources
Stripped THHN and romex, service entrance cable, bus bar offcuts, and heavy electrical wire from commercial pulls.
Electricians and demolition crews produce the most.
Is Stripping Worth It
Do the maths
On heavy gauge the jump from insulated to bare bright is usually worth the labour. On thin gauge it often is not - too little copper recovered for the time.

Bare Bright Copper FAQ

How much more is bare bright copper worth than #1 copper?
Bare bright commands a premium over #1 copper, and a larger one over #2. The exact spread moves with the copper market. Call or text 813-845-4168 and we will quote both grades against today's market so you can decide whether cleaning your load further is worth it.
Does my copper have to be perfectly shiny?
It has to be free of oxidation, coating and solder. Light handling marks are fine, but a green tint or dull brown tarnish moves it to #1. If you are unsure, send a photo - we can usually grade it from a picture.
What gauge does bare bright have to be?
Heavier than 16 gauge. Thinner wire is graded separately regardless of how clean it is, because the copper-to-surface ratio is different.
Do you buy bare bright copper in small quantities?
Yes. Bare bright is valuable enough per pound that even a modest quantity is worth bringing in. We are based in Largo and buy throughout Florida, with free pickup for qualifying volumes.
